Mentoring and Community Service
There are 3500-4000 children on probation in Bexar County at any given time.
There were 207 of them listed in the adjacent 78207 zip code as of July 2006.
Every child, with few exceptions, is required to do a minimum of 20 hours of community service as part of their “rehabilitation” while they are on probation.
We are working with Bexar County Juvenile officials regarding early intervention opportunities. CHRC has signed an agreement to become an approved community service point for children who are entering into the juvenile justice system. The kids that will be involved in our programs will be first time offenders, or kids who are considered to have a good chance.
It is our plan that this community service opens the door to our real goal - a true relationship opportunity with our neighbors through MENTORSHIP. Giving our volunteers an opportunity to work with our kids through performance of their community service hours opens the door to bonding and trust. We are continually recruiting people interested in learning more about this next step.
In addition, CHRC and the Bexar County Juvenile Authority have jointly created a Group Mentoring Program to serve a selected group of at risk-youth who are under the supervision of the Juvenile Authority. Life skills programs addressing anger management, abuse, family relationships, peer pressure, drugs, study skills,
money management, and other subjects are provided once per month for girls and boys in separate sessions. The sessions are fun and interactive and invites participation in a relaxed and non-threatening environment.
